What Is MiniSnip? The URL Shortener That Only Counts People
A plain explanation of MiniSnip: what it does with every link, why its click counts are lower and more honest, what the free plan includes, and who it's for.
In this article
MiniSnip is a URL shortener at minisnip.com. It turns long links into short ones, gives every link a QR code, and includes a free link-in-bio page. What sets it apart is the counting: MiniSnip checks every visit before it counts it, so link previews, crawlers and security scanners are kept out of your clicks. The number you see is people.
It has a free plan with 25 links and no ads, and a Pro plan at $19 a month that adds your own domain, unlimited links and team features. (MiniSnip at minisnip.com isn't related to other software with a similar name, such as screen capture tools or code editor plugins.)
What MiniSnip does
At its simplest, MiniSnip is a URL shortener: you paste a long address and get a short one, like minisnip.com/summer-sale, that sends people on to the original. Around that it adds the things people usually need next:
- A QR code for every link, with your colours and logo, as PNG or SVG. See QR codes.
- A link-in-bio page at minisnip.com/u/yourname, for your Instagram, TikTok or YouTube profile. See link in bio.
- Analytics for every link: clicks, unique visitors, countries, cities, devices and the app each click came from. See link analytics.
- Your own domain on Pro, so links look like go.yourbrand.com/sale. See custom domains.
- Editable links. Change where a link goes at any time, on every plan, without changing the link or its QR code.
What makes MiniSnip different
It counts people, not machines
When you paste a link into WhatsApp, iMessage, Telegram or Slack, the app opens it within a second to build the preview card. Facebook and LinkedIn send crawlers when a link is posted. Email security tools open every link in a message to check it. Most link shorteners count all of these as clicks, so a link shared in five group chats can show five clicks before anyone has tapped it.
MiniSnip recognises more than 140 bots by name, as well as requests from crawler networks, cloud servers and scripts. Those visits are listed separately, with the reason each was flagged, and never added to your clicks. How that works is explained step by step in how MiniSnip tells people from bots.
It names the app, not just "Direct"
Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Telegram and WhatsApp often hide where a click came from, so most tools file those clicks
as "Direct". MiniSnip recognises 25 in-app browsers and reads platform click IDs, so a tap inside Instagram is labelled
Instagram. For apps that hide everything, add a short tag such as ?src=wa to the link you share there.
It is private by default
Visitor IP addresses are stored only as one-way hashes, used to count unique visitors. Reports show countries, devices and sources, never individual people. You sign in with Google or a 6-digit code sent to your email, so there is no MiniSnip password to leak.
It keeps short links out of search results
Every short link tells search engines not to index it. That stops anyone using short links to push spam into search results, and keeps your own domain clean if you use one.
What a MiniSnip report looks like
Open any link and the top of its page shows four numbers: Human clicks, Unique visitors, Bot clicks filtered and Top country. Below them:
- Clicks over time, in your own time zone, for any date range.
- Countries and Cities, from the visitor's network.
- Sources: the app or site each click came from, including WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram, LinkedIn and QR scans.
- Devices, Browsers and Operating systems.
- Recent clicks: a live list of the latest visits with place, device and source.
- Bots: every filtered visit, by name, with the evidence for flagging it.
Reports for all your links together are under Analytics. On a public link, you can switch on a read-only stats page to share with a client or a colleague.

Who MiniSnip is for
- Creators who share links in bios, stories and chats and want to know which platform really sends people.
- Small businesses that print QR codes on menus, packs and posters and want to change the destination later.
- Marketers who report on campaigns and need numbers that don't include previews and scanners.
- Teams and developers who want links on their own domain, shared workspaces and an API.
Our guide to 8 ways to use MiniSnip shows each of these in practice.
How MiniSnip compares
MiniSnip is newer and smaller than Bitly or TinyURL. Where it is stronger:
- Against Bitly: a bigger free allowance with click data (Bitly's free plan shows none), unlimited destination changes, and your own domain from $19 a month rather than $29 a month billed yearly. See MiniSnip vs Bitly.
- Against TinyURL: click data on the free plan and bot filtering. TinyURL is quicker if you don't want an account. See MiniSnip vs TinyURL.
- Against Linktree: the link-in-bio page is free with honest view and tap counts, but it has no shop or custom designs. See Linktree alternatives.

What MiniSnip doesn't do (yet)
It's worth knowing the limits before you start:
- No mobile app. The dashboard works in your phone's browser, but there's no app to install.
- A simple bio page. The link-in-bio page has five themes, social icons and up to 10 links on the free plan. It has no shop, email sign-up form or custom design tools.
- Your own domain is a Pro feature. Free links use minisnip.com.
- 25 links on the free plan. That's a total rather than a monthly allowance: delete one and you can make another.
If any of these matter for what you're doing, our comparisons of URL shorteners and link in bio tools cover the alternatives fairly.
Free tools you can use without an account
MiniSnip also has free tools that work in your browser, no sign-up needed:
- WhatsApp link generator with a pre-filled message
- Telegram link generator
- Email link generator
- QR code generator
- UTM builder
How to start
Create a free account with Google or your email, paste your first link and press Shorten. The whole setup, including a QR code and a bio page, takes about ten minutes; our getting started guide walks through it.

Frequently asked questions
What is MiniSnip?
MiniSnip is a URL shortener at minisnip.com. It makes short links and QR codes, includes a free link-in-bio page, and shows analytics that leave out link previews, crawlers and security scanners, so clicks are people.
Is MiniSnip free?
Yes. The free plan includes 25 short links, a QR code for each, a link-in-bio page and 30 days of click data, with no ads and no card. Pro costs $19 a month and adds your own domain and unlimited links.
Is MiniSnip safe to use?
MiniSnip stores visitor IP addresses only as one-way hashes, uses sign-in with Google or an email code instead of passwords, and tells search engines not to index short links. Links used for spam or phishing are blocked.
Why are MiniSnip's click counts lower than other tools?
Because bots aren't counted. Chat apps, social networks and email scanners open links before people do. MiniSnip recognises more than 140 bots by name and lists them separately instead of adding them to your clicks.
Can I use my own domain with MiniSnip?
Yes, on Pro (3 domains) and Enterprise (25 domains). You connect a domain such as go.yourbrand.com with DNS records, and all features work on it.
Does MiniSnip have an API?
Yes. Pro and Enterprise include a REST API to create, update, list and delete links and read their clicks, plus signed webhooks. The documentation is at minisnip.com/docs/api.
