How to make a QR code for a link
- Paste the full link, including
https://. - Pick colours. Keep the code dark on a light background. Many phone cameras struggle with light codes on dark backgrounds.
- Download. Use PNG for screens and documents, and SVG for print: it stays sharp at any size.
- Test it with two different phones before you print anything.
Static or dynamic: which QR code do you need?
A QR code made here is static: the link is written into the pattern itself. It works for as long as the link works and needs no account. But you can never change where it points, and you cannot count scans.
A dynamic QR code contains a short link instead. The printed code never changes, while you stay free to change the destination and see every scan.
| Static (this tool) | Dynamic (MiniSnip short link) | |
|---|---|---|
| Change the destination after printing | No | Yes |
| Count scans | No | Yes, with bots filtered out |
| Needs an account | No | Yes, a free one |
| Simpler, faster-scanning pattern | Depends on link length | Yes, short links make small codes |
To make a dynamic code, create a free MiniSnip link and download its QR code from the link's page.
Size and placement
- Minimum size: print codes at least 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 inch). Go bigger for anything scanned from a distance.
- Rule of thumb: make the code about one tenth of the scanning distance. A poster read from 2 metres needs a code around 20 cm wide.
- Leave a margin. The blank border around the code, called the quiet zone, helps cameras find it. This generator adds one automatically.
- Shorter links scan faster, because they make a simpler pattern.
Track scans separately from clicks
If you use a MiniSnip short link, add ?src=qr to it before you generate the code, for example
minisnip.com/menu?src=qr. Scans then appear as their own source, "QR code", in your analytics, separate from people
who clicked the same link online.

Frequently asked questions
Do these QR codes expire?
No. A static QR code works for as long as the link inside it works. Nothing about the code itself expires.
Is it really free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of codes you make.
Should I download PNG or SVG?
PNG is best for websites, slides and documents. SVG is a vector file that stays sharp at any size, so use it for print.
Can I add a logo in the middle?
Not in this generator. It makes plain codes, which are the most reliable to scan.
Do you store the links I enter?
No. The QR image is generated when you request it and the link is not saved.
