How to Shorten a Link: 4 Free Ways, Step by Step
Four free ways to turn a long link into a short one, and how to pick the right one for what you are sharing.
In this article
The quickest way to shorten a link is to paste it into a URL shortener, press Shorten and copy the result. On MiniSnip you can do that on the homepage without creating an account.
That covers a one-off share. If the link will live in a bio, a printed flyer or an ad, a few extra minutes buys you a readable alias, click analytics and the freedom to change where it goes later. Here are four ways to do it, from the fastest to the most powerful.
Way 1: Shorten instantly, no sign-up
- Open minisnip.com.
- Paste your long link into the box at the top of the page.
- Press Shorten and copy the short link.
Links made this way expire after 7 days. That is fine for a quick message to a friend, but not for anything you will print, pin or reuse.
Way 2: Create a free account for permanent links
A free account turns a short link into something you can manage and measure.
- Create a free account. No credit card is needed.
- In your dashboard, paste the long link into Create a link.
- Type an alias, such as
summer-sale, so the link is readable:minisnip.com/summer-sale. - Press Shorten, then copy the link or download its QR code.
What you get on the free plan:
| Feature | Free plan |
|---|---|
| Short links | 25, never expiring |
| Custom alias | Yes |
| QR codes in PNG and SVG | Yes |
| UTM builder | Yes |
| Click analytics | 30 days, bots filtered out |
| Change the destination later | Yes |
Way 3: Shorten a link on your phone
You do not need an app. Shortening works in any mobile browser.
- In the app you are sharing from, use Share and then Copy link. Instagram, YouTube, Amazon and most other apps have this option.
- Open minisnip.com in your browser and paste the link into the box.
- Tap Shorten, then Copy, and paste the short link wherever you need it.
Tip: on iPhone, open minisnip.com in Safari, tap Share and choose Add to Home Screen. On Android, use Chrome's menu and Add to Home screen. You get a one-tap shortcut that works like an app.
Way 4: Shorten links automatically with the API
If you create links in bulk, for example one per product or per customer, let your own tools do it. With an API key from Settings (Pro plan), one request creates a link:
curl -X POST https://minisnip.com/api/v1/links \
-H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \
-H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"originalUrl": "https://yourstore.com/product/123", "shortCode": "p123"}'
The response includes the new shortUrl. For spreadsheets, Import CSV in the dashboard (also Pro) creates up to 1,000 links
at a time. See the API documentation for every endpoint.
Choosing a good short link
The ending of the link, called the alias, is the part people actually read.

Before you share: a quick checklist
- Click it yourself and check the page loads on a phone.
- Add UTM tags if you use Google Analytics. The free UTM builder makes this quick.
- Add
?src=wa,?src=tgor?src=qrwhen you share in WhatsApp, Telegram or print, so MiniSnip can tell those visits apart. We explain why in how to track clicks from Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram. - Make a QR code for anything printed, and test it with two phones.
Is it safe to shorten links?
Shortening a link does not change the page it points to, and it does not affect that page's SEO: search engines follow the redirect and judge the destination. A responsible shortener also keeps its own short links out of search results so spammers cannot abuse them. MiniSnip does this for every link. Read more in what is a URL shortener.
Frequently asked questions
Is shortening a link free?
Yes. You can shorten a link on the MiniSnip homepage without an account, and the free plan gives you 25 permanent links with analytics.
Do short links expire?
Links made on the homepage without an account expire after 7 days. Links in your account work until you pause or delete them, unless you set an expiry date.
Can I choose the ending of my short link?
Yes. Every plan, including Free, lets you set a custom alias such as minisnip.com/summer-sale, as long as nobody else is using it.
Can I change where a short link goes after I share it?
Yes, for links in your account. Edit the destination and the change applies from the next click, without changing the link you shared.
