One Link for the App Store and Google Play: How Smart App Links Work
Two store badges, two links and two QR codes are one too many. A single smart link sends every phone to the right store.

If your app is on both the App Store and Google Play, every campaign has the same awkward problem: which link do you share? Two badges work on a website, but a social post, an SMS, a podcast or a QR code on a poster can only carry one link. A smart app link solves this. It is a single link that sends iPhone users to the App Store, Android users to Google Play, and everyone else to your website.
How a smart app link works
When someone opens the link, their browser sends a short description of the device, called the user agent. The link service reads it and redirects:
| Visitor | Goes to |
|---|---|
| iPhone or iPad | Your App Store page |
| Android phone or tablet | Your Google Play page |
| Computer or any other device | Your fallback page, usually your website |
It happens in a fraction of a second, so the visitor simply lands in the right store.
One edge case to know about: Safari on iPad can ask websites for the desktop version, and in that mode it identifies itself as a Mac. Those visitors get your fallback page, so put App Store and Google Play badges on it.
Set it up in MiniSnip
Device targeting is part of the Pro plan.
- In Create a link, set the main destination to your website or app landing page. This is the fallback.
- Open advanced options and find Targeting.
- Paste your App Store link into iOS destination, for example
https://apps.apple.com/app/id123456789. - Paste your Google Play link into Android destination, for example
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.yourcompany.app. - Give the link a readable alias, like
go.yourbrand.com/app, and save.
One QR code for both stores
A smart link makes app-download QR codes much simpler: one code on the poster, the packaging or the TV ad, and every phone that scans it lands in the right store. Download the code from the link's page in PNG or SVG. Our guide on making QR codes for links covers size and contrast for print.
Know which campaigns drive installs
The stores themselves can attribute installs to campaigns. On the App Store, App Store Connect creates campaign links
with provider and campaign tokens. On Google Play, you can add a referrer parameter with UTM values to your store
link. Put those tagged store links into the iOS and Android destinations.
MiniSnip adds the other half: every click on the smart link, split by device, country and source, with bots filtered
out. Use a separate short link or a ?src= tag for each placement, such as ?src=poster or ?src=ig, and you
can compare which campaign sends the most people to the stores.
Tips for app campaigns
- Make the fallback useful. Desktop visitors can't install your mobile app. Show them what the app does, with store badges and a QR code they can scan with their phone.
- Test on real devices. Open the link on an iPhone, an Android phone and a computer before launch.
- Keep the link stable. If your app moves to a new store listing, change the destination; the printed link keeps working.
- Deep links. If your app supports universal links or app links, you can use them as destinations. Test them on real devices, because apps and browsers handle redirects into apps differently.
Beyond app stores
The same targeting works for anything that differs by device: an iOS shortcut and an Android APK guide, separate help articles for each platform, or a mobile-friendly page for phones only. Country targeting is available too, but on the same link a matching country rule takes priority over the device rules, so use one or the other per link.
Frequently asked questions
Can one link open the App Store on iPhone and Google Play on Android?
Yes. A smart link reads the visitor's device and redirects iPhones and iPads to the App Store, Android devices to Google Play, and everything else to a fallback page.
What happens when someone opens the link on a computer?
They go to the main destination of the link, usually your website, where you can show both store badges and a QR code.
Can I use one QR code for both app stores?
Yes. Create a QR code for the smart link and it sends each phone to the right store.
Which MiniSnip plan includes device targeting?
Device targeting is included in the Pro and Enterprise plans.
